The apprenticeship levy is a government initiative to fund apprenticeships. It was introduced in April 2017, and will only be payable for employers with a total wage bill in excess of £3 million. They will pay 0.5% of their total annual wage bill through PAYE. The levy has been created to fund this commitment, and to encourage employers to hire more apprentices to help address skills gaps in the UK. Funds will be accessed through a new Digital Apprenticeship Service – employers will be able to register for an account from January 2017. Levy funding can only be spent on apprenticeship training and assessment with approved providers like EThames
